Writing
Intent
At Minster, we believe that ability to write is fundamental to our children succeeding; enabling them to access the next stage of their education and beyond. Our curriculum has been designed to ensure that pupils enjoy writing and have passion and enthusiasm for it. Our aim is to ensure that pupils write clearly, accurately and coherently; write in different styles and for different purposes and audiences; develop a wide vocabulary and a solid understanding of the grammar rules and terminology appropriate for their age group. Our curriculum has also been designed to ensure that pupils are able to express themselves creatively and to communicate effectively with others. Skills are built on progressively.
We support children ‘To be the best we can be’ and:
- Ensure children leave as confident, capable and independent writers, who understand the importance of writing but also enjoy the writing process.
- Create confident writers who develop stamina for writing and are able to write at length, able to plan, practise and evaluate their work using feedback from their teacher.
- Support all of our children in becoming independent writers, building on a range of skills as they work through each journey of writing.
- Expose all children to high quality texts that model excellent writing practises across a broad range of genres.
- Ensure all children have a secure understanding of the purpose of a text type, and intended impact of writing skills and the ability to carefully select vocabulary with focus on the desired effect on the readers’ thoughts and feeling.
- Provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which encompasses writing practice and equips children with the skills and knowledge of the writing processes including handwriting, spelling, grammar, widening vocabulary and writing for different styles.
- Ensure we are inclusive of all children, including SEND by providing the appropriate scaffolding, support and writing tools those children need in their writing process to experience success.
Implementation
Writing skills are a key priority within our school where children use writing to model their development and understanding. We have a cross curricular approach to writing which is linked to our wider curriculum units of work, giving children a purpose for writing. Writing is taught in a way where children recognise themselves as authors or writers on every level, whether they are presenting facts, writing descriptively, creating stories or crafting poetry.
Within all units of writing, we stress the importance of spelling, punctuation, grammar and presentation.
The correct formation of letters and the development of a cursive style of writing begins in Early Years and is taught progressively throughout the school. Children can earn their pen licence once they have demonstrated consistently accurate, neat handwriting using the cursive script.
We support children ‘To be the best we can be’ and:
- Planned units of work focus on engaging, vocabulary rich texts as a vehicle to provide a wealth of writing opportunities.
- Units of work focus on fiction, non-fiction or poetry, in line with 2014 National Curriculum and comprehension, grammar and writing are embedded in lessons.
- Writing is taught daily, and children are given regular opportunities to build up writing stamina, skills, confidence and enjoyment.
- Teachers explicitly model the writing process at all stages. During lessons, key vocabulary, appropriate phrases, alternate pronouns relating to a piece of work is captured on flipchart paper and displayed around the classroom as a point of reference for children to support them in their independent writing.
- We tailor our planning to the needs of the class.
- Use Assessment for Learning and encourage our children to be active in reviewing the successes in their work and identify areas for improvement.
- Celebrate children’s writing throughout the school community.
Impact
In writing, pupils are encouraged to at every opportunity. Pupils will also participate in discussions with staff members to showcase their skills and know what they have learnt, identify how they have progressed and they know their next steps. We will identify moderation pieces, complete book scrutinies and participate in professional discussions to identify the impact of teaching and learning. The most important element of any child’s writing journey is for them to do their best.
We support children ‘To be the best we can be’ and:
- Children leave Minster Primary School as confident writers.
- Children have the key skills and knowledge necessary for the next stage of their learning.
- They are enabled to access a broad and balanced curriculum.
- Learners are proud of their successes and the progress they make.

Writing Assessment
Writing is a ‘teacher assessed’ subject in which teachers use a range of level descriptors to review children’s writing and grade it accordingly. The 'Kent Tracking Statements' below are a key document that teachers use to ensure that children are assessed against the national expectation for their age. Writing has to include a range of genres across both fiction and non-fiction.
It is a national expectation that writing at the end of KS2 is assessed in a secure fit model, this means that all statements must be achieved in order to be assessed at that level. Please click on the Year Group below to see the Kent Tracking Statements.
