Strategies to support pupils’ mental health and wellbeing.
At Minster-in-Sheppey Primary School, we aim to empower out pupils to take care of their own mental health and wellbeing. To support this we introduce a range of strategies which are quick and easy to use.
Breathing techniques:
When children become stressed or frustrated, breathing exercises are a brilliant way to help them get back to that calm state. Breathwork is even used by adults and can be useful in many situations.
The 5-4-3-2-1 method
Much like breathing exercises, the 5-4-3-2-1 method is an effective way of helping children get back to a calm state when they become overwhelmed. It helps them de-stress by encouraging them to focus on their senses rather than whatever might be bothering them.
The 5-4-3-2-1 method works like this:
- Name five things you can see.
- Name four things you can feel.
- Name three things you can hear.
- Name two things you can smell.
- Name one thing you can taste.
Mindful Colouring
Colouring is great aid to relaxation and also supports hand eye coordination.
