Multiplication Check

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) for Year 4 pupils is a short, online assessment to determine if children can fluently recall their times tables up to

12×12   12 cross 12

For 2026, the check will take place within a two-week window for most pupils, starting from Monday, June 1st, 2026

Key Information for Parents

  • Purpose: The MTC ensures children have a strong foundation in multiplication facts, which is considered vital for future success in mathematics. It also helps schools identify pupils who may need additional support in Year 5.
  • Format: The check is an on-screen, digital assessment completed individually on a computer or tablet in school.
  • Structure: There are 25 questions in total. Children have 6 seconds to answer each question, with 3 seconds of rest between questions. The entire check takes less than 5 minutes to complete.
  • No “Pass” Mark: There is no formal “pass” mark or expected standard threshold for the MTC. Results are reported as a score out of 25 to parents in the child’s annual report, and are used by teachers to inform future support.
  • Inclusivity: The check is designed to be inclusive, with access arrangements available for pupils with specific needs, such as special educational needs or disability (SEND). Parents with concerns about their child accessing the check should discuss this with the school’s class teacher.

How to Support Your Child at Home

The goal is to build fluency and rapid recall of multiplication facts in a low-stress way.

  • Regular Practice: Encourage short, regular practice sessions rather than long, stressful ones. Practise Multimagcian table sheet with your child
  • Use School Resources: Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com)
  • Make it Fun: Use games, songs, or physical activities to help memorisation (e.g., using “Supermovers” videos from the BBC).
  • Focus on the Tricky Tables: The 8 and 7 times tables are often considered the most difficult, so these may require extra focus.
  • Communication: Speak to your child’s class teacher for specific advice on how your child is progressing and for targeted support strategies. The UK government also provides an official information for parents document with further detail
