Computing

'The advance of technology is based on making it fit in so that you don't really even notice it, so it's part of everyday life.'
Bill Gates

What is computing and why is it important at Minster?

Curriculum Intent

At Minster-In-Sheppey Primary School, our vision is for every child to be the best they can be – the best learner, best friend and best citizen. We recognise and understand that technology plays a crucial role our pupil’s lives due to the technological advancements in our world. Due to this, we endeavour to ensure that our pupils are given rich opportunities to develop and master the skills of the computing curriculum responsibly, positively and safely to ensure they are able to thrive in the modern world.

We have created our curriculum to provide depth, breadth and balance which will provide them with a progressive curriculum ultimately endeavouring for our pupils to be digitally literate in order to be active digital citizens. Our Minster Muscles, especially Teamwork, Self-Reflection and Evaluation and Risk-Taking are embedded throughout ensuring children are working with other and continually reflecting on and improving their work.

Implementation

At Minster-In-Sheppey Primary School, our computing curriculum’s foundations are taken from the National Curriculum programme of study for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. At Minster- In-Sheppey, we have chosen to use the Purple Mash Computing Scheme of Work from EYFS to Year 6. The scheme of work supports our teachers in delivering fun and engaging lessons which helps all pupils to achieve their full potential.

Our computing curriculum is divided into the 3 key strands, from the National Curriculum, which are crucial in preparing children to be part of and thrive in a digital world.

The 3 strands are:

  • Computer Science – focuses on introducing fundamental concepts such as algorithms, helping children understand how digital systems work and how to put this understanding to use through coding and programming
  • Information Technology – understanding how digital technology works and how to use it to purposefully create intended outcomes.
  • Digital Literacy – ensures children are able to safely and effectively engage as active participants in the digital world, both in the present and the future, through an understanding of using digital tools to find, evaluate, create and share information. Pupils are encouraged to think about their digital citizenship and use critical thinking to ensure they are confident and responsible users of technology.

Impact

At the end of each year, pupils at Minster-In-Sheppey would have experienced opportunities to apply their Computing skills using a range of software that have encouraged creativity, collaboration and challenge.

Progress will be assessed through regular monitoring and evaluation of pupil’s learning, against the National Curriculum statements and our progression documents which build on previous learning, knowledge and understanding. Within the Purple Mash Computing scheme there are numerous opportunities for formative assessment through each lesson, as well as exemplar statements to support summative assessment. Retrieval practice is built into each teaching and learning sequence to assess both learning over time and performance to support lesson adaption.

The subject leader conducts learning walks, book looks and pupil voice to evaluate the curriculum and help inform future adaptations to our computing curriculum.
