It is ours, and every school’s responsibility “to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
Definition of British Values:
Democracy: ‘We all have a say and a voice. We create change for the better through working together and talking about what we want to achieve together.
The Rule of Law: We are law abiding citizens. We respect the rules of school and laws in society. We know the laws are for everyone. Laws help to keep us safe and protect people.
Individual Liberty: We know our human rights and freedoms and can use our rights and responsibilities in school life, outside or at home. We know we can question what we are told in a respectful way. It is important to have freedom to hold an opinion even if others disagree with it.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance: Together we are one community. Through our respect and understanding of one another we will find a positive way to live in peace because we care.
Our curriculum provides opportunity to look at fundamental British Values and learning about these are designed to prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain.
As a school we will help our pupils to understand:
The importance of combatting discrimination.
How we can influence decision-making by taking part in the democratic processes like voting and petitioning.
Our freedom under British law to choose different faiths and beliefs.
That the law is there to keep us safe.
Part of our duty as a school is to also prevent children and families from extreme radicalisation and these duties are set out in the ‘Prevent Duty 2015.’ For you as families this means being safe in the knowledge that through the school curriculum as well as the ethos of the school, we encourage the children to have a balanced and respectful world view which shows tolerance and understanding of all people regardless of their ethnicity, faith or gender.
